Organic farming is a technique which involves the cultivation of plants in natural ways. This process involves the use of biological materials, avoiding synthetic substance to maintain soil fertility and ecological balance thereby minimizing pollution and wastages or In other words, Organic farming is a method that involves growing and nurturing crop without the use of synthetic based fertilizers and pesticides.
Importance of organic farming in Nepal
Organic farming focuses on utilizing natural materials in agriculture and prohibiting the use of the chemical fertilizers and pesticides which ultimately ruins the fertility of land. Initially heavy use of chemical fertilizers increases the production of land but as time passes the production capacity of land decreases and finally may reach to zero production. So we need to focus on organic farming which helps to produce safe, nutritious and quality food products together with maintaining ecological balance and its sustainability also.
Is Organic farming possible in Nepal
Great possibility of organic farming exists in Nepal because many places are not to be reached by modern technologies and fertilizers. It is believed that Nepalese farmers are more committed for the organic farming compared to other South Asian countries.
The rapid agricultural intensification, high input technology and use of high yielding hybrid varieties have increase the use of agrochemicals. It has improved the agricultural production by vigorous crop growth and controlling diseases and pests. However the farmers of Nepal are unaware about the safe application dosage, frequencies and waiting periods of the agrochemicals. So, in the context of Nepal farmers should be more prefer organic farming rather than other modern technological methods.
